Some sights are touristy for a good reason. They’re the ones you plan a Europe Tour Package: a wobbly gondola on the canals of Venice, or the mandatory Eiffel Tower selfie with your fam or an Instagram story from the London Eye. Europe has limitless sights all worth a visit in their own right, but there is so much more to the continent than its cathedrals and beaches – and some of them are quite bizarre. So here comes a quick list of all the bizarre off beat quirky things you can do on your Europe Tour Package.

Sleep with fishes at Sweden’s Utter Inn

In many ways, Sweden's Utter Inn is your classic Swedish house: its walls are wood-panelled and painted red, has a white gabled roof, and the location – propped on a small island in the heart of Lake Malaren – is classic Scandinavia. But things get a little surreal once you take a look out of the window of the hotel’s solitary room. A large Baltic salmon glides past, trailed by a huge shoal of smelt. These aren’t your usual lakeside views, but then you are not actually lakeside. A night here is more like breathing in a goldfish bowl. This will be an amazing experience on your Europe Tour Package.

Spend a night at the cells in Latvia’s Liepa–ja prison

Being imprisoned in a foreign country is generally the matter of holiday nightmares. Unless you wish for an insight into Latvian history, that is. The former naval prison in Karosta, a Russian-built port that stretches from the seaside city of Liepāja to the north, is now a setting for an interactive tour which involves delights as being herded at gunpoint by actors clothed as Soviet prison guards. Stay the night and things get harder – you may find yourself mopping the floors before bedding down in one of the bare cells, only to be awakened by a brutal early morning call. Not sure if this is an activity to be experienced with family or not, but we surely assure you this is not worth missing on your Europe Tour Package.

Toboggan without snow in Madeira, Portugal

Though you make the 560m climb up to the Monte, the hillside town which hangs calmly over Madeira’s capital, Funchal, there’s only one way we would recommend getting back down: toboggan. There’s no snow, of course – it is a subtropical paradise. The road acts as your black run as you dash towards sea level in a huge wicker basket. In the beginning, the progress is slow. Then gravity takes over, powering you to the speed of up to 45 to 50 km/hr. When you feel you are going too fast to stop (there are no real brakes here), your guide will dig his/her rubber boots into the tarmac – giving you the first chance to jump out, look down and admire the gleaming blue Atlantic that stretches out in front of you. Experience this thrill on your Europe Tour Package and adorn your Instagram stories with the same (but Safety first).

Join a hammer festival in Portugal

Porto’s Festa de São João is a splendid display of midsummer madness – one big street party, where groups of hammer-wielding lunatics stray the town, and every presented outdoor space is given over to a full night of eating, drinking and dancing in order to appreciate the city’s saint’s day. Nobody seems to know the foundation of this tradition of hitting individuals on the head (with a plastic hammer, off course). Evening till night sees the climax of fireworks. Get into the gleemy vibe of the festival on your Europe Tour Package and have a blast!
